It’s been several months since John and I last wrote a post, and we wanted to give our readers an update as to why we never finished the series we started on open-system carbon removal. The reason for our radio silence is that we connected with an amazing founding team to launch a new organization called Cascade Climate. Cascade is a global nonprofit working to accelerate progress with interventions that harness Earth’s natural systems—from soils, to oceans, to glaciers, and more—to help stabilize our climate.
Along with our colleagues we’ll be writing regularly on the Cascade blog in the coming months and years—subscribe here to follow along with our public writing and occasional Cascade updates + announcements.
While we haven’t been operating in stealth mode and have had wide conversations across the community, we were excited to finally launch Cascade publicly earlier this week. In connection with the launch, here are a few links to check out:

This blog post we wrote together, in the wake of Frontier’s big announcement of a $57M offtake agreement with Lithos, about what it will take to create the foundations of a healthy learning-by-doing market cycle for ERW

We’ll have more to say in coming weeks about our journey so far. As we started to write about the powerful role of open systems, we increasingly felt that we wanted to do, and not just write. In May and June of this year, we joined up with Jenny Mills, Vilas Rao, Hara Wang, Taylor Chapman, and Alex Price—along with Noah Planavsky and Chris Reinhard as senior contributing scientists—to develop the vision for Cascade.
The Great Unwind and Carbon Travels will stay active as our personal blogs, though we’re not yet sure how often we’ll write personal posts with the new Cascade blog launching. We really appreciate all of your support and readership as we have found our way to a perfect-fit home in the climate world. We’re super excited to dive way deeper with you in the coming months and years into countless complex open system themes!
